CASA CUBO
Lea van Steen and Marcio Kogan, 2013, Brasil
These are “film exercises” shot by the video-artist Lea van Steen together with the Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan in some of the houses projected by his studio mk27 in Sao Paolo. Very short videos presenting a different way to observe the room and the architecture: from the viewpoint of the domestic helper with whom we visit Casa P (Modern Living) with its numerous configurations and its amazing logistic and functional details to the one of the cat Dudu (Cat Film) that – led by the director Jacques Tati – we follow to discover Casa Toblerone of which he seems to be the real owner. Casa Cubo, instead, is shown through sequences, cuts, macro-details, games of shadow and texture with magical light changes as if we were on the set of a detective story.

CAT DAYS
Jon Frickey, 2018, Italy, 11’09”
The idea for the animation’s plot came to the German director Jon Frickey when he stayed in Kyoto in 2012. That is why, in his mind, the film was always set in Japan. Jiro, a little boy, feels sick. His father takes him to the doctor’s. She diagnoses a harmless case of cat flu. But it shakes the core of the boy’s identity. It is a children’s film, but also for those who love the genre.

Kammermusik audiovisuelles GebäudeklanPortrait
Katharina Blanken, Germany 2015, 8’40"
Looking at the infrasonic backside, the place where the windows should be closed and the curtains drawn, anonymously rehearsing for a concert. Looking at the building, you will notice the musicians, sitting and rehearsing in their separately lit rooms. Every night, this results in a visual interplay of those parallel worlds - like some kind of mosaic or musical sequencer, still, this auditory interplay is not actually audible. The concept for this audiovisual sound portrait of the Robert Schumann School of Music building in Düsseldorf, was founded when thinking about the idea of "switching" these rooms on and off, thus connecting and arranging the independent pieces of music and light. One will experience 14 musicians and a conductor, - the conductor is opening, the musicians are apparently reacting. Together, a composition specially made for this portrait is being performed. All of the rhythmic and harmonic sequences obviously seem self-sufficient by nature, but are made to appear united to the listener/viewer. This, in turn, presents the viewer with a connection that needs to be questioned.

The Island
Roberto D’Amico, Alessandro Dotti, 2018 Italy, 13’
Chasing swell around the world is an integral part of Roby's life. And although it is very rewarding it is not always that easy. At the beginning of November I got a whattsup from Roby that said: "Africa is calling". Well, let's go to Morocco. It was not Morocco but it did not matter, 12 hours later I was in London with Roby and Nils ready for another adventure. We arrived on the island but the swell we monitored did not have the right direction. The search began. With the help of some locals we found some funny waves but it was not what we were looking for. At the end of the first week we decided to stop and wait for the second swell to come. We missed our flights but the waves did not arrive. Between sessions and more than 1000 km driven we became an integral part of the Island's culture, visiting every single spot and living with what this beautiful location had to offer. This was part of the journey and we found a way to spend time discovering things that we would never had the way to live directly. We lost another flight and the third week the swell finally showed up. But when you want something too much the worst things can happen and that's how life goes.

Her
Spike Jonze, USA 2013, 126’
Set in Los Angeles, in the not too distant future, Her tells the story of Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a sensitive and complex man who makes his living writing personal and touching letters for other people. Destroyed by the end of a long relationship, Theodore remains fascinated by a new and sophisticated operating system that promises to be a unique, intuitive and very high performance tool. Thus he meets "Samantha", a synthetic female voice (Scarlett Johansson) lively, empathetic, sensitive and surprisingly witty. As her needs and desires grow together with his, their friendship becomes deeper and deeper until she turns into real love. From the visionary fantasy of Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter Spike Jonze, Her arrives, a singular love story that investigates the nature - and the risks - of intimacy in the contemporary world.
For this film Jonze recomposed the team formed by K.K. Barrett (scenography), Eric Zumbrunnen (editing) and Casey Storm (costumes). They were joined by cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema and editor Jeff Buchanan. The soundtrack is by Arcade Fire. The other pieces of music featured in the film are by Owen Pallett.
